Image description

Detail of a satyr's head from a floor mosaic with the heads of Pan and a satyr. From a Roman villa perhaps belonging to Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus at Genazzano. The mosaic presents an articulated geometric composition in which figurative elements and heads of Dionysiac characters are inserted within circular spaces framed by ribbons in a figure-of-eight pattern. The mosaic dates from the second half of the 2nd century. Photographed in 2008.
