the inscription repeated on both sides is in the name of the mamluk sultan Barquq. elements of the decoration are typical of other Mamluk marquetry but the combination of uncarved panels, as on the row at the base of the cupboard, with the finely detailed inlay of the upper panels is unusual. the cyma recta molding at the top of the cupboard is typical of the european furniture but not known on any mamluk objects. it is possible that the cupboard was built in the nineteenth century to incorporate some original panels-cupboard-wood with inlay of bone or ivory-inv.n.23767-Mamluk 1382/99 and later-MIA - 15 07 09 023
