Image description

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbit (L) and Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt sign a land-swap agreement, that trades thousands of acres of state trust lands within national parks, monuments, and forests for developable federal lands, May 8 in Salt Lake City. The deal, the biggest land swap ever in the continental United States, will give the federal government 376-thousand acres of school trust land. In return, the feds will give Utah 145 thousand acres of much more useable school trust land. The deal could mean more than a billion dollars for Utah students. scw/Photo by Steve C. SCW/SV/WS
