Image description

Freddy Peccerelli (L), the president of the Guatemalan Foundation for Forensic Anthropology (FAFG), helps an unidentified survivor (C) of a 1982 massacre to identify the remains of his relatives in Xolcuay, Guatemala, February 02. In February 28, 1982, a military patrol killed 99 people in the highland village of Xolcuay, some 90 miles north west of Guatemala City, during the country's 36-year civil war. Thanks to a grant by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Dutch government, the Guatemalan Foundation for Forensic Anthropology (FAFG), exhumed and buried the remains of 35 people. Human rights groups believe there are hundreds of clandestine cemeteries in Guatemala stemming from the Guatemalan army's "scorched earth" counter-insurgency campaign. Date changed - 20years after RM/JP
