Image description

Peruvian Archbishop Juan Luis Cipriani cries during a press conference in Lima April 23. Cipriani, a member of the guarantor's commission for negotiating an end to the hostage crisis at the Japanese ambassador's residence, said the end to the hostage crisis caused him a "great pain" and that they did not know before-hand of the government's plans to storm the besieged diplomatic compound. All 14 of the Tupac Amaru rebels died as well as one hostage and two soldiers. Cipriani acted as a mediator visiting the compound many times during the 126 days of the seige. PERU JAPAN
