Image description

The Swiss Ernest Guglielminetti, nicknamed "Dr. Goudron", in a picture of December 6, 1942 on the occasion of his nomination for honorary citizen of Brig, canton of Vaud, Switzerland on his 80th birthday. On Wednesday March 13, 1902 whole Monaco was in an uproar. Prompted was the uproar by the Briger original, the doctor Ernest Guglielminetti. He was constructing the first pavement surface made of tar worldwide, what lead to massive protests. On the Corniche-Street in Monaco, France, "Dr. Goudron" paved on March 13, 1902 one part of 40 metres with tar. The authorisation to do so was given to him by Prince Albert I. of Monaco in person. Ernst Guglielminetti was born on November 24, 1862 in Brig, canton of Valais as son of Italian immigrants. He studied medicine and travelled as colonial doctor to many countries in the world. The idea to mix tar with sand and gravel he had when he saw the floors covered with wooden material in Indian hospitals. The floors were covered with a coating of tar to seal them and to facilitate the cleaning. Guglielminetti died on February 23, 1943. (KEYSTONE/PHOTOPRESS-ARCHIV/Str) Photographer: STR
