The picture shows workers' barracks at the entrance to the large St. Bernard tunnel, taken on 25 May 1960. The large St. Bernard runs north-south and connects the town of Martigny in the canton of Valais with the upper Italian town of Aosta in the valley of the same name. It has a total length of 5.8 km. Work on the first transalpine road tunnel began in 1958 and was completed in March 1964.
