A Cave Bear attacking Prehistoric Men in a Dug-Out. Scientists who have made a study of the Earth have not yet agreed as to when and by whom this island was first peopled. In anthropology the period of the earliest inhabitants is referred to as the Palaeolithic or Early Stone Age, from the fact that flint implements, roughly fashioned and unpolished, were used. The mammoth, the cave bear, and a species of rhinoceros, together with other extinct animals, shared the possession of the land with man, and their bones have been found in caves and sheltered places.
