Lieutenant-General Sir Samuel Venables Hinde KCB, 1832 circa. Oil on canvas, artist unknown. Bust length portrait wearing undress uniform with he Army Gold Cross (without bar) and the Badge of a Knight of the Spanish Order of Carlos III. Hinde was commissioned as ensign in the 25th Foot in 1788 and promoted to lieutenant four years later. During this period he served in the Mediterranean (Gibraltar and Corsica). Promoted to captain in 1795, major (with the 32nd Foot) in 1800 and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1804, Hinde went on to serve in Ireland (1801-1807) and at Copenhagen (1807), before taking part in the Peninsular War. His service during the latter campaign included the battles of Vimeiro (1808) and Corunna (1809). Hinde was promoted to brevet colonel in 1811 and that year was given command of a brigade of the 6th Division. Wounded at the Battle of the Bidassoa (1813), he was promoted to major general in 1814. Appointed lieutenant general in 1830, Hinde died in September 1837. He was Colonel of the 98th Foot between 1829-1832 and Colonel of the 32nd Foot 1832-1837.
