This scene is viewed from the lee bow, with yachts and escorts depicted close-hauled on the starboard tack.
The tower on the left background is identified by the inscription 'sgravesande'. In the left centre foreground is the ship ‘Mary’ (de Marije) with the ‘Charlotte’ (de siarlet) close astern. Astern of these ships are the ‘Anne’ (de Anne), ‘Charles’ (de siarles), ‘Navy’ (de navij) and the ‘Katherine’ (de katarijn). In the centre distance, the Dutch escorting flagship, the ‘Liefde’ (de liefde), lies on the water. On the left is the ‘Greyhound’ (de grahont) and the ‘Portsmouth’ (de portsmout).
