Artist: William West (c1793-1860) View of proposed Clifton Bridge with steam ship passing under bridge and an observatory visible in the background. `Distance between the points of suspension, 450 Ft. Height above High Water Line to Road Way 220 Ft. Height of Parapet Walls and Iron Railway above the Foot-Paths, 7Ft. 6in. Span of Stone Arches 50Ft.- Breadth of Carriage Road 20Ft. Breadth of each Foot-Path 5 Ft.-Total Breadth of Platform, 30 Ft.-supporting Chains, 5 Bars each. Extreme length of supporting chains from the fastenings in the Rocks, 930Ft. Published by J. Rees, Bookseller, 53 Wine Street, Bristol, from a Drawing by Mr. W. West, May, 1830. R. Martin. Lithog. 124 High Holborn, London. William Armstrong (fl. 1780 - 1858) was born in Perenwood, Northumberland in c.1780. In 1824 he became resident engineer to the Thames Tunnel, but resigned through ill-health in 1826. He became an architect and civil engineer and worked as a building surveyor in Bristol from 1836 until his death in 1858.
