ANTI SUHARTO POSTER AT INDONESIAN CONSULATE IN MELBOURNE, 1998-11-18 (photo)

A poster showing former Indonesian President Suharto holding an automatic assault rifle accompanied by his successor B.J. Habibie (L) is stuck to a gate of the Indonesian consulate in Melbourne after a protest November 18. Members of Melbourne's Indonesian community, mostly students, presented a list of demands to the consulate in the wake of the recent rioting in Jakarta where up to 14 people were killed. Their demands included that Habibie and General Wiranto be held responsible for the bloodshed, that the government stop the use of violence, abolish the dual-function of the military, reject the outcome of the special session of parliament that does not reflect the will of the people and to hasten the process of bringing Suharto and his cronies to justice.
