In 1476 King Matthias of Hungary (1443-90) defeated the Turkish armies at Sabatz, a fortified military outpost, now known as Sabac in Serbia . Matthias Corvinus or Matthias I (Hungarian: Hunyadi Mátyá) was King of Hungary and Croatia from 1458. After conducting several military campaigns, he was elected King of Bohemia in 1469 and adopted the title Duke of Austria in 1487.
