Image description

JER20:FEATURE:EIN GEDI, ISRAEL - FOR RELEASE WITH STORY BC-ENVIRONMENT-DEADSEA - Vacationers covered in mineral rich Dead Sea mud walk some 400 metres towards the seashore, whilst a trolley transports people back from the water to the Dead Sea Spa resort. The Dead Sea, visited since Biblical times for its mineral-laden waters, has dropped by 40 metres in the last 50 years, leaving barren mudflats where the water has receded. Tourism and industry are the largest threats to the unique sea. Uncoordinated plans by Israelis, Palestinians and Jordanians, if implemented, would add 50,000 new hotel rooms as well as highways and industrial expansion to the basin, further shrinking the sea and polluting its shores.
