Changing Times

Formed in 1883 by well-known suffragette May Wright and her husband Theodore, the Art Association of Indianapolis’ (as it was then known) first exhibition was a humble selection of 137 artists work, displayed at the old English Hotel in downtown Indianapolis.

After changing their name to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1969, their collections, exhibitions and educational programmes grew substantially, and in 2005 they expanded to their new state-of-the-art $74 million, 152 acre campus.

Gems of the Collection

The IMA’s encyclopedic collection encompasses more than 54,000 artworks spanning more than 5,000 years of human civilization.

Highlights of their collection include an impressive array of works by Gauguin and J.M.W Turner including the1820 watercolour, Rosslyn Castle. More contemporary pieces in the collection include Two White Dots in the Air by Alexander Calder as well as Light and Space III, a permanent installation by Robert Irwin located in the museum’s Pulliam Great Hall.
