Mr Burridge Standing, 1948 (pencil on paper)

This life drawing, made at the City Brewery, Heavitree, Exeter, Devon, shows a cooper standing proudly in his workshop. In the foreground there is a T-shaped anvil (cooper’s stake) for punching rivet holes in hoops and a cooper’s hammer, either for beating on hoops or for flaring them. On the left a croze plane is lying on the floor. Next to it is a cooper’s block with a hand-axe. In the middle ground, from left to right, there are a wooden brace with auger bit and five drawing-knives for shaping staves. Three short-handled and one long-handled cooper’s adzes are ranged on the workbench, while leaning against it are staves ready for mounting.
