Soldiers have cornered a gang of smugglers in this dramatic scene. Numerous small bays and the isolation of the North East coast around Cullercoats made it popular with smugglers wanting to avoid tax on imported drink and other goods. Smuggling became less common when the railway reached the coast in the 1840s. This type of subject was one of the specialities of Henry Perlee Parker, who lived in Newcastle from 1815 to 1841.
