Image description

Prosthetic eyes date back to the 16th century in France when gold or silver decorations were used to fill the empty socket or was placed on the eyelid itself. Up to the mid 19th century, enamel, then glass eyes were specially made, until “stock eyes” (or pre-made) eyes became available. An “eye doctor” would fit the wearer from his stock of premade eyes with all different color irises, in all sizes. This was a really great invention especially for the veterans of World War II.
