The scene takes place in the middle of a barren country; Joachim, in the right foreground, has sunk into sleep in his humble thatched hut, where he moved to atone for the humiliation of his sterility; an angel descends from heaven keeping his right hand raised, to bring the glad tidings of the upcoming maternity of his wife Anna; on the left, two shepherds, committed to graze their flocks, are surprised by the appearance; into a lobed cornice within the decorative band on the right is frontally depicted a saint bearing a cross, possibly Saint Andrew.
