Walker (b.1799), an ardent abolitionist; convicted and sentenced for trying to help seven escaped slaves in Florida; spent one year in solitary confinement when his hand was branded; photo commissioned by Henry Ingersoll Bowditch, a Boston abolitionist; actually right hand cos of daguerreotype process;
