Captain Thomas Masterman Hardy (1769-1839), British naval officer; the box is made from a piece of the HMS Victory, Lord Nelson's flagship during the Battle of Trafalgar; inscription reads 'This box was formed from a splinter of HMS Ship Victory and presented by a part of that ships company to her Captain Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy soon after the Battle of Trafalgar and given to me by his widow 23rd Jany 1840.- W. Kerr. V. Ad. of the White'; Vice Admiral Kerr was related by marriage to Hardy;
