For the upper middle classes of the Victorian period, clothes were status symbols. For the majority, however, they were a simple, unglamorous necessity. Most among the lower classes wore only what they could afford, with clothes changing hands many times among family and friends. Clothiers such as Thomas Barrett organised the manufacture and delivery of cloth, providing workers with raw materials, and a space to sell finished products.
