Description
At the Battle of Hastings in 1066 William the Conqueror was aided by Alan Rufus, Count of Brittany, and subsequently rewarded him with extensive estates in the north of England, which were formed into the honour of Richmond. This manuscript contains a record of this property. The image shows Richmond Castle, eight parts of which are marked with a heraldic shield or banner: these relate to the text below: 'The place of Ranulf FitzRobert in Richmond Castle, at the chapel of St. Nicholas [at the top left of the image]; The place of the constable in the tower enclosure [at the lower right of the image]; . . .'
