Image description

probably 1804-1809 A framed colour drawing on grey paper, showing: a half-length portrait of Sir Humphry Davy (1778-1829), chemist and inventor, most notably of the Davy lamp; Davy spent time in Bristol as a laboratory assistant at Dr Thomas Beddoes's Pneumatic Institution in Dowry Square, Hotwells (1798-1801), where in early-1799 he conducted experiments into nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and later some investigations into electricty; in 1820 he succeeded Sir Joseph Banks as President of the Royal Society; this work is undated, and is unlikely to have been made during Davy's time in Bristol, when the artist was in the USA; it probably dates to the period 1804-1809; for another Sharples family drawing of Davy, see Mb801.187; for a James Sharples drawing of Thomas Beddoes, see K1024
