One of a pair of side tables, c.1701 (carved and gilded pine, marble veneer, stone)

Pair of rectangular console tables; each with green marble top. Frieze under the top has a band of interlacing ovals and stylised flowers, under which is pierced scrolled decoration comprised of oak leaves, acorns, lions' heads and central female mask crowned with a shell. Jean Pelletier was of French origin but by 1682 he had settled in London. Through the patronage of the francophile Duke of Montagu, who was responsible for overseeing the furnishing of the royal palaces, Pelletier supplied suites of grand giltwood furniture for Hampton Court Palace including this table, which was probably one of those delivered in 1701 at a cost of £35 each, en suite with two pairs of candlestands [RCIN 57029]
