Description
Described by one acquaintance as a "delirious orchid" and nicknamed 'La Melinite' after a form of explosive, Jane Avril was a star performer at a famous dance-hall called the Moulin Rouge. The carriage wheel and the light in the background of this work suggest that she is entering the building, possibly for a performance. Jane's gaunt face projects a character very different from the extroverted sensuality to which she owed her fame, but the hat and coat on the wall to the left are perhaps intended to serve as a reminder of her male admirers. The work has been executed in a combination of oil paint and pastel.
