Description
Hagia Sophia is one of the best surviving examples of Byzantine architecture. The Hagia Sophia was constructed, from 532 to 537, at the orders of Emperor Justinian I and designed by Isidore of Miletus. At the western entrance and eastern liturgical side, the arched openings are extended by half domes carried on smaller semi-domed exedras. Exterior was painted dirty pink which is the color of all Orthodox churches. The exterior, clad in stucco, was tinted yellow and red during a restorations in the 19th Century. Hagia Sophia is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Cite from 1985.
