General de Gaulle, General Spears and Colonel Leclerc in Chad, 1940-41 (b/w photo)

Charles André Joseph Marie de Gaulle (1890-1970) was a French general and statesman who led the Free French Forces during World War II. He later founded the French Fifth Republic in 1958 and served as its first president from 1959 to 1969. Major-General Sir Edward Louis Spears, 1st Baronet,(1886-1974) was a British Army officer and Member of Parliament noted for his role as a liaison officer between British and French forces in two world wars. Philippe François Marie, comte de Hauteclocque, then Leclerc de Hauteclocque (1902-47), was a French general during World War II. He became Marshal of France posthumously, in 1952 and is known in France simply as le maréchal Leclerc.
