Lake MacKay, Australia - Lake MacKay, Australia - Lake Mackay is Australia's fourth largest lake. Located on the border between Western Australia and the Northern Territory, this dirty lake has an area of 4,737 km2. Located in the heart of the great sand desert, it is an ephemere lake that only appears in the rain. Image obtained on 15 March 2017 by the Sentinel-2B satellite. Located on the border of the states of Western Australia and Northern Territory, the salt lake only sees water after seasonal rainfall - if at all. It is classified as an ephemeral lake, meaning it exists only after precipitation. This is not the same as a seasonal lake, which sees water for longer periods. The greens and blues in this image show desert vegetation or algae, soil moisture and minerals - mainly salt. On some of the brown 'islands' and on the shore in the lower right, we can see the east-west sand ridges forming lines in the landscape. Power and warmth are provided by a SNAP generator near the rear. Stereo cameras are in front. Water intakes for chemical analysis are behind the front fairing. Attitude control is provided by small thrusters. Main propulsion comes from a small propellor equipped with a Kort nozzle. The oceans of Europa and the other Galilean moons could prove to be the most surprising environments in the solar system

Palm islands, Dubai 10/2002 - Palm islands, artificial islands built on the coast of the Emirates of Dubai. False colour image obtained by the Terra satellite in October 2002. The vegetation appears in red, the water in dark blue, the constructions in light blue or grey, the desert in beige. This image, acquired in October 2002 by Terra satellite, shows the early stages of Palm Jumeirah, also known as The Palm”” in Dubai. The circular outline of the archipelago is largely completed, and the palm fronds are beginning to take shape. Inland, cityscape begins to push eastward into the desert, with a combination of roads and buildings. The conspicuously vegetated area southeast of Palm Jumeirah is a golf course. Just an hour and a half after this image of Hurricane Ike was captured by the MODIS on NASA's Aqua satellite on September 7, 2008, the National Hurricane Center released its 2:00 p.m. EDT public advisory, warning residents of Cuba and other Caribbean islands, as well as the Florida Keys, that Ike was a dangerous Category 4 hurricane, with winds near 135 mph (215 kilometers per hour), with higher gusts. The image shows Ike approaching eastern Cuba, the eye just west of Great Inagua Island (one of the Turks and Caicos Islands). According to later advisories, Ike made landfall as a Category 3 storm, with winds around 125 miles per hour.
