Nebulae of the horse's head and M42 in Orion - Horsead nebula and Orion nebula - Dark Nebula of the horse's head (IC434 - B33). Further down, the large Orion nebula (M42) vast star-forming region. This large complex of nebulosity is located about 1,500 light years away in Orion. The Orion complex is a gigantic stellar nursery where stars are forming out of the dust and gas in the region. Light echo of supernova 1987A - July 1989 - The light echo of supernova 1987A - July 1989 - Image obtained with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Supernova 1987A appeared in the constellation Doradus on February 23, 1987. When supernova 1987A was seen to explode in the Large Magellanic Cloud, the Milky Way's nearest companion galaxy, the brilliant flash of light from the self - destructing star had taken about 170,000 years to arrive. Some light was deflected by two sheets of dust near the supernova, and is seen after the star has faded away because it covers a longer path to reach us. The dust responsible for the rings seen here lies in two distinct sheets, about 470 and 1300 light years from the supernova. The colour picture, made by subtracting images on plates taken before and after the supernova, is an accurate reproduction of the colour of the extremely faint light echo, which in turn reflects the yellow colour of the supernova when it was at its brightest, in May 1987.

The infrared image of the Spitzer telescope shows young stars (red and pink) that appeared about 3 million years ago and still surrounded by their gas cocoon. The nebula is located 1043 years of light from Earth. The IC 348 is a cluster which contains more than 300 young stars. Baby stars are forming near the eastern rim of the cosmic cloud Perseus, in this infrared image from Nasa's Spitzer Space Telescope. The baby stars are approximately three million years old and are shown as reddish - pink dots to the right of the image. Center of the Andromede Galaxy (M31) - Center of the Andromeda galaxy - The Andromede galaxy is located about 2 million years ago - light from Earth. Like the lactee path, the Andromede galaxy belongs to the local group. This image obtained from the 2.5m Isaac Newton telescope of La Palma shows the central region of the galaxy where a huge mass of stars is orbiting around the nucleus. This picture covers almost half a degree of sky (about the size of the full moon), but wide angle telescopes show the galaxy to be over three degrees long at its widest. Here we see only the central part of M31, the huge mass of stars that are in orbit around its nucleus. Silhouetted against this starry background are tangled sheets and curtains of dust, very reminiscent of dust clouds we see in our own galaxy. This picture was made from three black and white glass negatives. Some care has been taken to ensure that the colours seen here are realistic
