From ancient times the constellation of Andromeda has represented a woman and in Greek mythology Andromeda was the daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopeia, king and boastful queen of the Phoenician kingdom of Ethiopia. As punishment for her mother's arrogance she was chained to a rock as a sacrifece to Cetus, then rescued by Perseus whom she subsequently married. The modern constellation is the 19th largest in the sky and covers about 720 square degrees but is not very obvious. The three brightest stars of Andromeda form a broad arc south of the distinctive 'W' of Cassiopeia, and under a dark sky the elongated shape of M32 is just visible to the unaided eye. This is by far the best - known object in the field. Best seen in the early evening in Novembe

Paranal Observatory, Chile: The Very Large Telescope (VLT) and its auxiliary telescopes seen on August 9, 2014. In the sky the galaxy of Andromede is visible. The four 8m telescopes telescopes, named Antu (Sun), Kueyen (Moon), Melipal (Southern Cross), and Yepun (Venus) form a very versatile observatory. They can be used as a single large telescope that adds (incoherently) the light from all four, in order to achieve the light gathering ability of a single 16m telescope. Also, their light can be combined in a coherent manner in order to achieve a solving power equivalent to the one of a telescope with a diameter as large as the baseline between the units. Of course, all the telescopes can be used individually, which is usually the default mode of operation

Infrared view of the Andromeda galaxy - Infrared view of the Andromeda galaxy - This image shows the difference in infrared radiation between the light emitted by the aged stars (blue) and that emitted by the dust (star-forming zone, red). By measuring the infrared radiation emitted by a galaxy, more or less important depending on the nature of the stars, the mass of that galaxy can be reduced. According to this method, the mass of stars in the Andromede galaxy would be 110 billion times that of the Sun, which means that this galaxy would have 1 trillion stars (our galaxy had 400 billion). Spiral galaxy M33 in the Triangle - Spiral galaxy M33 in Triangulum - M33, the galaxy of the Triangle is located about 2 million years from Earth. It belongs to the local group, just like our galaxy or Andromede galaxy. In red, star-forming regions appear. Image obtained from the Isaac Newton telescope of La Palma. M33 is a large, almost face - on spiral galaxy about 2.5 million light years distant in the northern constellation of Triangulum. It is a member of the 'Local Group' of galaxies, which is dominated by the Milky Way and M31. Like M31, M33 is approaching the Milky Way at a velocity of about 180km/s. Although the total light M33 galaxy is that of a star of magnitude 5.3, its large diameter makes it hard to see. However, despite its low surface brightness, this galaxy was among the first to be identified as a 'spiral nebula' by Lord Rosse in the 1840s. On shorter exposures, the nucleus appears very bright and almost stellar, like that in its southern cousin, NGC 300
