Kepler is the rest of a supernova that exploded about 400 years ago located about 13,000 light years from Earth in the constellation Ophiuchus. The X-ray image obtained by the Chandra space telescope highlights areas where the gas reaches the highest temperatures (in dark blue) - Kepler's supernova remnant, first seen 400 years ago by sky watchers, including famous astronomer Johannes Kepler. The Chandra X-ray data show regions of very hot gas, and extremely high-energy particles. The X-ray image obtained by the Chandra space telescope highlights areas where the gas reaches the highest temperatures (in dark blue) - Kepler's supernova remnant, first seen 400 years ago by sky watchers, including famous astronomer Johannes Kepler. The Chandra X-ray data show regions of very hot gas, and extremely high-energy particles. Kepler's supernova, the last such object seen to explode in our Milky Way galaxy, resides about 13,000 light-years away in the constellation Ophiuchus. Equuleus (the Little Horse or colt) is a small and undistinguished constellation located about 10 degrees north of the celestial equator. It is the second smallest constellation in the sky: only Crux is smaller. It contains no bright stars, so, unlike Crux, it is difficult to find, though Delphinus is a useful guide. There is little of astronomical interest here that is accessible to small telescopes. Vulpecula, the Fox, first appears in Johannes Hevelius' atlas of 1690 and was originally called Vulpecula Cum Anser, the fox with goose, but the bird has flown and the fox is hardly obvious. The constellation crosses part of the northern Milky Way and lies just south of Cygnus. The main stars of Sagitta are also well seen here

Equuleus (the Little Horse or colt) is a small and undistinguished constellation located about 10 degrees north of the celestial equator. It is the second smallest constellation in the sky: only Crux is smaller. It contains no bright stars, so, unlike Crux, it is difficult to find, though Delphinus is a useful guide. There is little of astronomical interest here that is accessible to small telescopes. Vulpecula, the Fox, first appears in Johannes Hevelius' atlas of 1690 and was originally called Vulpecula Cum Anser, the fox with goose, but the bird has flown and the fox is hardly obvious. The constellation crosses part of the northern Milky Way and lies just south of Cygnus. The main stars of Sagitta are also well seen here

The light from these stars is sufficiently rich in ultraviolet light to cause the gas to glow with its characteristic red colour. In most cases, such as here, the hot stars formed recently from the hydrogen cloud.
