Sita is embraced by Kausalya, who reminds her unnecessarily that her first duty is her husband despite his fallen state, and she replies that a good woman regards her husband as her god whatever his status. Behind are gold vessels heaped with clothes and jewels for her, enough for fourteen years, provided by the king, while the two brothers make a final respectful gesture of farewell. Sita's bark robe lies discarded. Outside, wait a chariot and a group of mournful citizens.
